Meaning of Old Norse word "hand-höggva" (or hand-hǫggva)

hand-höggva (hand-hǫggva)

hjó, to hack one’s hand off, Eb. 58, Fms. viii. 167.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, hand-höggva may be more accurately written as hand-hǫggva.
