Himin-jöðurr

Old Norse Dictionary - himin-jöðurr

Meaning of Old Norse word "himin-jöðurr" (or himin-jǫðurr)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

himin-jöðurr (himin-jǫðurr)
m. the corner, brim (jaðarr, jöðurr) of heaven, = himinskaut, Vsp. 5 (απ. λεγ.) This, no doubt, is the correct form, not himin-jó-dýr (heaven-horse-beasts) or himin-jó-dur (heaven-horse-doors).

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, himin-jöðurr may be more accurately written as himin-jǫðurr.

Possible runic inscription in Younger Futhark:ᚼᛁᛘᛁᚾ-ᛁᚢᚦᚢᚱᚱ
Younger Futhark runes were used from 8th to 12th centuries in Scandinavia and their overseas settlements
