S. meaw; Engl. mew; Germ. möve; Dan. maage]:—a sea-mew, gull (larus), Edda (gl.), freq. in mod. usage; see also Lex. Poët., where the word freq. occurs; hvít-máfr, the common gull; grá-máfr, the grey gull, larus glaucus: in poetry the sea is máva-röst; má-grund, má-ferill, má-skeið, the land, road of the sea-mews, Lex. Poët.: crows are ben-már, blóð-már; the raven is Yggjar-már, Odin’s mew, and so on.
