Sel-för

Old Norse Dictionary - sel-för

Meaning of Old Norse word "sel-för" (or sel-fǫr)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

sel-för (sel-fǫr)
f. the keeping cattle in a sel, Grág. ii. 277, Eg. 765, Landn. 95, in both passages used as mod. sel-staða: a right to keep a sel in a pasture, kirkja á selför á Flateyjar-heiði fjórum kúm, ú Balafelli, á Neðravöll, Heydal, Pm. 92, 71, Vm. 18, Dipl, v. 26.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, sel-för may be more accurately written as sel-fǫr.
