n. a great poet; slik þjóðskáld sem um mik hafa ort. Fms. vi. 366; hevr þjóðskáldit! kvattú svá, gröm skömm, ekki eru þær hendingar jafnháfar, 386; þá muntú verða þ. ok yrkja lof um marga höfðingja, iii. 103, and so in mod. usage.
