Breið-öx

Old Norse Dictionary - breið-öx

Meaning of Old Norse word "breið-öx" (or breið-ǫx)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

breið-öx (breið-ǫx)
f. [old Dan. breth ôxa; Germ. breitaxt; A. S. brâd æx], a broad axe, n. G. l. i. 101, FmS. ix. 33, Ísl. ii. 210, v. l., Bret. 84, Bjarn. 36, Orkn. 360; ‘brand-ox,’ Ed. l. c., is a false reading.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, breið-öx may be more accurately written as breið-ǫx.

Possible runic inscription in Younger Futhark:ᛒᚱᛁᛁᚦ-ᚢᛋ
Younger Futhark runes were used from 8th to 12th centuries in Scandinavia and their overseas settlements
