Spörr

Old Norse Dictionary - spörr

Meaning of Old Norse word "spörr" (or spǫrr)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

spörr (spǫrr)
m., gen. spörs, Ýt. 8. but sparrar, Landn. 135, [A. S. spearwa; Engl. sparrow; Dan. spurv; cp. Fr. épervier]:—a sparrow, Edda (gl.); spórr einn, Hkr. i. 24: as a nickname, Landn. l. c.: the word is, however, rarely used in Icel.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, spörr may be more accurately written as spǫrr.

Possible runic inscription in Younger Futhark:ᛋᛒᚢᚱᚱ
Younger Futhark runes were used from 8th to 12th centuries in Scandinavia and their overseas settlements
