1. ð, mod. leigja, [Dan. leje], to hire; leiga e-t at e-m, to hire from a person, Grág. i. 427; útlegð varðar þeim er þiggr lán eða leigir, ef hann veit at fleiri eigu, 437; hinn er landit leigir, who holds the land, Nj. 236; hann leigði land tíu hundruðum, Bs. i. 418; leiga jörð, N.
