m. the standard-bearer, Þorst. Siðu H. 170, Eg. 52, Nj. 136: in later times it was a post of high rank at the king’s court, stallari eða m., Gþl. 365, Bs. i. 712; whence it came to mean a man of mark, a distinguished person, Ld, 10, Eg. 36, Fs. 20, 161: hverir merkis-menn biskuparnir hafa verit, Bs. i. 59.
