n. [Dan. stift, and earlier Low Germ. form stigt]:—in Denmark and Norway the country is divided into stifter, i. e. bailiwicks, or eccl. bishoprics; in Icel. the word and thing are quite mod.; hence stiptamt and stiptamt-maðr, a governor.
