E. and Scot. tarn], gen. tjarnar, pl. tjarnir, a tarn, small lake; tjörn ein, Fær. 46, Rb. 352, Stj. 75, 268; þeir leika knatt-leika á tjörn þeirri er Sef-tjörn heitir (viz. on the ice), Gísl. 26 (cp. leikpallr íss á vötnum varð | í vetrinn þannig hjuggu skarð, Bb.), cp. Vígl. S. ch. 13 new Ed., very freq.
