m. a beggar’s staff; bera vánarvöl, Hm. 77; ganga með vánarvöl, to walk with a beggar’s staff, be brought to beggary, N. G. l. ii. 71: mod. also, fara á vonarvöl.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, vánar-völr may be more accurately written as vánar-vǫlr.
