Icel. miðskipa), and stern, fyrirrúms-menn, m. pl. one placed in the f., cp. Engl. midshipman, Fms. vii. 223, viii. 224:—metaph. phrase, hafa e-ð í fyrirrúmi, to keep a thing in the fore-hold, i. e. to give preference to it.
