G. l. passim: Imbru-dægr, n. = imbrudagar, Fms. viii. 356: Imbru-nátt, f. Ember-night, K. Þ. K.: Imbru-vika, u, f. Ember-week, D. n. The word was no doubt borrowed from the English along with the eccl. rule; but the etymology was lost, so that the ancients derive it from Lat. imber, see Lex. Poët. (pref.), or even trace it to an old woman called Imbra.
