d, (and kol-fellir, m.), to lose utterly, of a man who loses all his live stock from cold or hunger; hann kolfeldi, he lost his all; það varð kolfellir: it may be a metaph. from cutting wood for charcoal; or perhaps a remnant of an ancient Scandin. law term, preserved in early Swed., viz. kull-svarf = the death of mother and child in childbirth, and kjöl-svarf = of husband, wife, and child, all perishing at sea, see Schlyter. cp.
