Dan. hæftig]:—the earliest sense is feud, deadly war; vinna e-m heipt, to wage war (do battle) against one, Vkv. 10; deila heiptir, to wage deadly feud, Hkv. 1. 44; senda e-m heiptar-boð, to challenge one to combat, Fas. iii. 27 (in a verse): hereto belong such poët. epithets as, heiptar-nýtr, heiptar-strangr, heipt-bráðr, heipt-fíkinn, heipt-glaðr, heipt-mildr, heipt-minnigr, heipt-móðr, heipt-örr, heipt-snarr, = mighty in war, warlike, all of them used as ‘ornamental’ epithets of praise, vide Lex. poët.: as also heiptar-hvessir, m. a war kindler, id.
