Frið-skjöldr

Old Norse Dictionary - frið-skjöldr

Meaning of Old Norse word "frið-skjöldr" (or frið-skjǫldr)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

frið-skjöldr (frið-skjǫldr)
m. a ‘peace-shield,’ a shield being used as a sign of truce, answering to the mod. flag of truce; in the phrase, bregða upp friðskildi, Fas. ii. 534, Orkn. 432, Hkr. iii. 205: the truce-shield was white and opp. to the red ‘war-shield,’ Hkv. 1. 33.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, frið-skjöldr may be more accurately written as frið-skjǫldr.
