1. d, to rest, esp. to rest, sleep in a bed; í hvíluna þar er hón hvíldi, Eg. 567; h. í rekkju sinni, Fb. ii. 195, Sturl. iii. 282, Fms. vii. 222; h. tveim megin brikar, Korm.; the old beds stood with the side to the wall, hence the phrase, hvíla við stokk, or þil, cp. 2. u, f. [Ulf. hweila = ὤρα, χρόνος; A. S. hwîl; Engl. while; O. H.
