Meaning of Old Norse word "gnöllra" (or gnǫllra)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

gnöllra (gnǫllra)
að, (nöllra, Karl. l. c.; hence the mod. nöldra to grumble, nöldr grumbling):—to howl, bark; hundrinn hljóp upp gnöllrandi, Fas. iii. 545; haukar þeirra gnöllraðu, Karl. 376, v. l.; við þessi orð spratt hundrinn upp ok gnöllraði hátt, Fms. iii. 13; hjarta hans gnöllraði í honum innan-brjósts eins og greyhundr, rendering of Od. xx. 13, 14; þar eru tveir hundar ok nöllra þeir ok grenja, Þiðr. 245.
