hvönn (hvǫnn)
f., gen. hvannar, pl. hvannir, [Norse kvanne], angelica, archangelica L., Grág. ii. 348, Fms. ii. 244, Fbr. 87, 88: wild angelica being common in Icel., the word is freq. in local names, Hvann-á, Hvann-eyri, Hvann-dalr, Landn. In olden times the angelica seems to have been much used to give flavour to ale; see jóll.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, hvönn may be more accurately written as hvǫnn.
