Skrökva

Old Norse Dictionary - skrökva

Meaning of Old Norse word "skrökva" (or skrǫkva)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

skrökva (skrǫkva)
að, to tell or invent a story; lokleysa sem kátir menn s. sér til gamans, Fas. iii. 193, v. l.; margir hyggja þat satt sem skrökvat er, Sturl. i. 23, v. l.: with dat., s. e-u, eg s. því ekki, Skíða R. 130; s. e-u upp, to invent a falsehood; skammi mig ef eg skrökva ! This word is much used in mod. speech, being gentler than ljúga, to lie.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, skrökva may be more accurately written as skrǫkva.
