Old Norse Dictionary - þjökka

Meaning of Old Norse word "þjökka" (or þjǫkka)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

þjökka (þjǫkka)
að, [þykkr, m.; cp. A. S. þaccian; Chaucer to thack], to thwack, thump, beat, chastise, = þjaka, q. v.; þjökka skal hræsinn nið með hrísi, whack a self-willed son with the rod, Sighvat. (see hríS.)

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, þjökka may be more accurately written as þjǫkka.

Younger Futhark runes were used from 8th to 12th centuries in Scandinavia and their overseas settlements
