Old Norse Dictionary - töðu-gjöld

Meaning of Old Norse word "töðu-gjöld" (or tǫðu-gjǫld)

As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

töðu-gjöld (tǫðu-gjǫld)
n. pl. a kind of ‘churn-feast’ in Icel., when all the infield-hay is dry, stacked, and housed, and a kind of porridge, called töðugjalda-grautr, is given with cream to the labourers.

Orthography: The Cleasby & Vigfusson book used letter ö to represent the original Old Norse vowel ǫ. Therefore, töðu-gjöld may be more accurately written as tǫðu-gjǫld.
