[akin to þveita], a stone, prop. a sling-stone (?); tóku mikinn stein, sá heitir þviti, ok höfðu þann stein fytir festar-hælinn, Edda 20; en þviti heitir hæll er stendr í hválinum, Edda ii. 515; hramm-þ., the ‘hand-stone,’ i. e. a gem or a bracelet, Höfuðl.: the word is still known as poët., e. g. liggðu þvita hulinn hér, honum einginn bifi! a mod. Icel. epitaph on a dog buried beneath a stone.
