f. a Norse law term, originating from the heathen age when dead bodies were still burnt, vide arfsal, a sort of clientela, giving life-long support to a man; ‘til brands eðr báls,’ i. e. ad urnam, and inheriting him when dead; defined N. G. L. i. 50.
