að, [Germ. spielen], to play; the word occurs in the 14th century; hann spilar fingrum at Rómi, Fbr. 198 (in the text of the Fb. the old phrase is leika fingrum, see Rm.), passim in mod. usage.

2. also, to spend; s. út eigum sínum, of a spendthrift; út-spilan, squandering.
