f. [O. H. G. dihsila; Germ. deichsel; old Swed. þistl; Lat. tēmo qs. tesmo (?); the inflexive l is a diminutive]:—a cart-pole, remains only in the poët. compd sár-þisl, a ‘wound-stick,’ i. e. a sword, Ísl. ii. 389 (in a verse).
