S. ch. 25; Gorr hafði Eyjarnar ok var hann því kalladr sækonungr, Orkn. 8; Sváfu barn ok sækonungs, Hdl.; hvernig skal sæ kenna? For a list of the names of mythical sea-kings see Edda (Gl.), ending thus,—sékk-at ek fleiri sækonunga, 111. The word is poetical, and refers only to the ancient age of the Vikings in the 8th and 9th centuries, see konungr.
