Hm. 2; the poor had in old times to go from house to house; cp. göngu-maðr, föru-maðr; therefore misery and tramping are synonymous, e. g. válaðr, miseria; cp. A. S. vædl = ambitus:—not till the establishment of Christianity were poor-rates and other legal provisions made for the poor.
