adj. landed, esp. as a law term; lendr maðr, lendir menn, = ‘landed-men’ or the barons of ancient Scandinavia, holding land or emoluments (veizlur) from the king, and answering to hersir (q. v.) of a still earlier time; heita þeir hersar eða lendir menn í Danskri tungu, Edda 93; gjörði konungr þá Þórólf lendan mann, ok veitir honum þá allar veizlur þær er áðr hafði Bárðr haft, Eg. 35, Sks. 5, Fms. i. 60, ix. 496, Gþl. 12, and passim in the Laws and Sagas, but never referring to the Icel. Commonwealth.
