E. ain; Germ. eigen; Swed.-Dan. egen]:—own, one’s own; this word is in mod. usage indecl. in case and number, only marking the gender, e. g. mín, minnar, mínum eigin …, but mitt eigið, etc.; old writers use a full declension, til eiginnar konu, K. Á. 110; eigna konu, Str. 20; sínum eignum bróður, Hom. 158; spýju sína eigna, 159; í sínu eignu fóstrlandi, Stj. 103; fyrir sínum eignum sonum, 240; hafa at eignum manni, one’s own husband, Fagrsk. 10; eiginnar konu barn, 13.
