a, m. [Ulf. ulbandus = κάμηλος; A. S. olfend; Hel. olvunt; O. H. G. olpente; from the Gr. ἐλεφάς, -άντος, although in an altered sense]:—a camel, Stj., Greg. passim; the word occurs as the nickname of a man early in the 11th century, Fms. vi. (Brynjólfr úlfaldi); it is still in full use in Icel., hægra er úlfaldanum at ganga í gegnum nálar-augað enn ríkum manni at komast í Guðs ríki, Luke xviii. 25; hann tók tíu úlfalda … af síns herra úlföldum … hún segir drekk þá, eg vil og gefa þínum úlföldum að drekka, Gen. xxiv. The word ‘camel’ has never been adopted in the Icel.
