2. metaph., ráða hverft, to give false counsel, Karl. III; fara hverft, to start, stagger, as if frightened, Nj. 197, Sd. 154; whence the mod. verða hverft, to be startled, be frightened: of clothes, rétt-hverfr, turning right; út-hverfr, turning outside; as also út-hverfa, rétt-hverfa, u, f.
